Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, has a chemical composition of CaF2, and its crystal is an isometric halide mineral. It emits blue or purple fluorescence under the irradiation of ultraviolet rays, cathode rays or heating, hence the name. The crystals often appear as cubic, octahedral or cubic interpenetrating twin crystals, and the aggregates are granular or massive. It is light green, light purple or colorless and transparent, sometimes showing rose red and white stripes, with a glass luster, and can be transparent to opaque. The octahedral cleavage is complete. The Mohs hardness is 4, and the specific gravity is 3.18.
